TAMIU's mega newspaper "The Bridge" just celebrated it's 15th anniversay with a toy drive for those kids less fortunate. I am not very familiar with this particular periodical but it's good that they are involved in helping the public. This milestone by TAMIU's newspaper reminded me of another venture that did not pan out at our local university. In December, 2005, Tricia Cortez wrote an article about the TAMIU's pending application for an on-campus radio station that was to be affiliated with National Public Radio. In the article, Cortez wrote:
Dan Jones, provost at Texas A&M International University, said the university will have a chance to bid on a noncommercial radio frequency next spring. If TAMIU is successful, the move would also allow the school to set up a radio station on campus and develop a media production track within the communications department.
Apparently, this plan did not come to fruition. One on the most encouraging thing about this proposal was that the licensing application would have been absolutely free since TAMIU is a state institution. Alas, it would be a good move for Laredo if TAMIU was to renew it's attempt to bring such a radio station to campus.

Universities will get less money from the state now that Texas is facing a budget deficit. Higher enrollment is being viewed as the remedy for such cutbacks. Having a media outlet at your disposal surely helps with recruitment.
