What's a "Pony League" and why has it been fast-tracked by City?

Pony League this, Pony League that...what's going on?
Up to about a year ago, I had never heard of anything called the Pony League. I now understand that it's a youth baseball program similar to the tried and true Little league. Nonetheless, I understand that there are some differences. The Pony League is city-wide and the kids have to pay about $100 just to join. These two facts do not present a problem for those youngsters who : 1) can afford to pay the $100 and, 2) have transportation to any park in the city. On the other hand, for those kids who cannot afford the fee and who might have trouble getting a ride to distant parks, Little League remains the best option.

The sad fact is that for some reason, the City of Laredo has been siding almost unilaterally with any and all of the Pony League's needs. For example, at tonight's council meeting, the City of Laredo, at the request of councilman Mike Garza, discuss possible action(s) to promote a Pony League tournament scheduled for the summer. That sounds like an excellent way to, not only support our youth, but also bring much-needed revenue from out-of-town visitors to the tournament. So far, so good. But, there is a down side to all this support for Pony League. Since Laredo has a limited number of baseball parks, it is possible that those in the Pony League may, with the help of the city, divest the less fortunate of a place to play. This is because Little League has it's boundaries and those participating can play only at designated parks. Usually, these kids can either walk or take a short ride to the park. However, if Pony League (which is city-wide) has a need for any and all parks available, they will usurp those facilities because they have the blessings of our city council.

Although it's always about the money, we need to consider the consequences of going after the allmighty dollar with blinders on. Let's hope Mr. Garza will consider those who cannot afford to play in the Pony League. I'm sure that the many parents who are part of his constituency would appreciate it.

  2. Very true. The tournaments are money makers. I think that was the big issue over at Slaughter Park which was supposed to have soccer fields and I think they ended up putting baseball - again because of the $$. I could be wrong but not about the Pony League being a money maker.

  6. What is being done with all the monetary donations the city of Laredo donates every year? Who is dipping into all if this ? Do the kids in pony league actually receive any new products from these monies ?
